Starting a new routine can be difficult. Starting a new routine that requires us to put ourselves through physical discomfort for a return months away can be fricking hell. So, why do we struggle to find time for something we all know is incredibly important?

1. Making decisions may actually sap some of our willpower

Making a lot of decisions can make it more difficult to ignore bad impulses, weigh negative and positive outcomes, and make further decisions. That means after a long day of thousands of decisions, many of us make poor decisions or just avoid making any at all. We come home, eat, and crash in front of the T.V. It feels good and we know that we don’t have to do anything else. Even choosing what to watch can be a daunting task. When you are ready to start, keep this in mind and try to limit the number of decisions you have to make to get to the gym. If you want to go three times a week, set specific days and times so you don’t find yourself after a long day wondering whether tomorrow will be warmer or if you should do Friday instead of Thursday this week.

2. There are no immediate, tangible rewards

You’ve done it! You’ve finally decided to change your life, researched how you’ll start, and signed up at a gym and all of that motivation has left you with what? A gym tag and a hope that you can do this. It makes it very difficult to obtain what you actually wanted when you purchased a membership. It takes consistency, many tough decisions, and commitment. The majority of the work falls on your shoulders but don’t worry we are here to support you wherever we can. Keep the hope close and remember that it gets easier every time you go.

3. We can always start tomorrow

Maybe you aren’t there yet. You’ve always got something on the go or somewhere to be. I know I should and I’ll get around to it but just NOT TODAY. Procrastination is something all of us are familiar with. If the thought of exercising causes you anxiety, don’t worry, you are not alone! Just remember that thoughts like “I’ll be more motivated tomorrow” or “I need to be in the right frame of mind” only lead to more procrastination. Recognize that now is always the best and easiest time to do something!

4. It’s easy not to have integrity with yourself

Everyone wants to be known for doing what you say you’re going to do. Why doesn’t that apply to the things we tell ourselves? “yesterday, I said I would start tomorrow”. Why do we let ourselves get away with saying that day after day? Hold yourself accountable!

Setting yourself up to succeed is incredibly important and these are just a few of hundreds of reasons why we fail to make time to exercise. Being self-aware and looking out for the obstacles preventing us from developing a healthy lifestyle are great ways to plan for success.
